From RAF to Commercial Pilot

Paul has flying in his blood. In addition to his drone flying, he has been flying manned aircraft for 40 years, 20 of which were in the RAF on fast jets and helicopters, and latterly as an airline pilot for Flybe, Monarch and Virgin Atlantic amassing over 10,000 flying hours.

Paul completed his Private Pilots Licence in 1983. After serving a 20-year career as a fixed-wing and rotary Navigator in the RAF, he went on to become a Commercial Pilot for over 10 years. Initially operating Dash 8 Q-400 aircraft as a Captain for Flybe, then flying Airbus A320/1 aircraft for Monarch Airlines, he was also recently employed as a Senior First Officer with Virgin Atlantic. Paul is a graduate of the RAF Aircrew Instructor Course and Ground Instructional Techniques course.

He is also a Qualified Helicopter Tactics Instructor and has also instructed in Electronic Warfare, Combat Survival and Open Water Scuba Diving. During his staff tour serving with the HQ of the British Army, he was responsible for setting and implementing air training policy at strategic and tactical levels. In his final tour with the RAF, he was Officer Commanding Training at No 33 Sqn flying Puma helicopters from RAF Benson, where he was responsible for the training and examination of the flying and tactical operational standards of 75 Aircrew.

Paul has enjoyed flying RPAS for seven years and instructing on them for six, using his RAF instructors’ training to help aspiring drone pilots achieve the GVC. Experienced in Survey and BVLOS operations, he is also our flight safety representative and consults with our clients to help them write their Operational Safety Cases for E/BVLOS and close proximity flying. Paul’s pedigree of aviation operating, and experience brings a wealth of knowledge to the team here at Drone Pilot Academy.

Paul is a keen photographer, especially wildlife, and uses his drone to capture the beauty of his home on the West Coast of Scotland.
